November is Native American Heritage Month. Meet My Mississippi by Patricia Neely-Dorsey is an excellent resource to both highlight Native American culture and demonstrate how the Native American culture has influenced Mississippi and the country.
The Kindle Edition would be an extremely easy way to use this resource to discuss Native American Heritage Month. You could use the desktop kindle app to project the images for class discussion.
Meet My Mississippi can easily be integrated into a variety of lessons, but I love how it lends itself to discussing Native American culture and contributions. This is extremely helpful especially since November is Native American Heritage Month. The author and illustrator help introduce the topic by highlighting the culture of the Natchez, Choctaw, and Chickasaw tribes that lived in the state of Mississippi. The author and illustrator also help with this topic by describing and depicting the Emerald and Pharr Mounds. The book and upcoming lesson plans help teachers approach the topic in a way that not only satisfies Social Studies standards but can help teachers cover various ELA standards as well.
Many students might know about Native Americans but not realize how Native American culture helped influence Mississippi. Teachers can use the book to help students make connections between history and modern Mississippi. Meet My Mississippi is such an excellent resource/tool for this topic as well as so many others regarding Mississippi.
I just got the expanded or textbook edition and I highly recommend it as an excellent classroom resource. It has so many questions and tie-ins to help teachers create lessons and units. The book can be used to teach social studies and ELA standards. In fact stay tuned for some lesson plans tailored for Mississippi teachers.
