As a first time homeschooler, I am still floundering a bit. I have been introduced to an extremely useful resource over the last few weeks that has helped with that feeling of being overwhelmed though. The resource is Love at Home Education and their K-12 curriculum. The Love at Home tagline says it all: “Love at Home Education-A Dinner-table friendly, all-inclusive family curriculum; that your high schooler, and kindergartner can learn together on their own levels.”
The first Love at Home Curriculum that I have been able to explore is their Terrestrial Biomes of the World Unit. I was a junior high teacher for seven years. Two of those I taught seventh grade science. I wish I would have had access to this curriculum while I was still in the classroom. The plans are comprehensive and allow for the user to tailor them to their individual needs.
The Biomes of the World Curriculum is broken up into smaller units by biome: Tundra, Rainforest, Borest Forest, Deciduous Forest, Grassland, and Desert. One of the first things I noticed about this curriculum is that you can buy it in .pdf form or print form. This might not seem like a big deal, but for someone like me, who has had a lot of printer issues, the print version could be a lifesaver. Plus the print version also comes with a .pdf version as well!
The Biomes Curriculum comes with a suggested schedule, but I chose to investigate the Rain Forest and Deciduous Forest Units first. The units are broken down even further into mini units and lessons. Each lesson has individual lessons with activities, links for additional resources (youtube videos for instance), vocabulary builders, and more.
We loved the Cocoa Mini Unit. Learning where chocolate comes from was great. I appreciate the curriculum incorporates activities and lessons for all grade levels.
Our homeschool coop utilized some of the suggested books and adapted some of the lessons from the rainforest and deciduous tree units with our tree scavenger hunt and snakes lessons.
I would highly recommend this curriculum to homeschoolers and maybe a Science teacher or two as well. I am looking forward to utilizing this curriculum and others from Love at Home Education in the future.
